17 Sustainable Development Goals

On October 24, 1945, El Salvador became one of the 193 countries to join the United Nations, and since then they have been an active participant in promoting peace and equality throughout the world. Most recently in 2015, the United Nations created 17 Sustainable Development Goals in an effort to create a “shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future”. These are goals aimed at being achieved by 2030.

The United Nations agreed that in order to end worldwide poverty that it must go hand-in-hand with economic growth, addressing social needs, while simultaneously combating climate change and promoting environmental protection.

El Salvador has prioritized nine of these goals: end poverty, zero hunger, health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, climate action, peace, justice, and string institutions, and partnerships to achieve these goals. In order to do this, El Salvador has focused on implementing public policy directly focused towards obtaining these goals and has created an implementation team in which officials from 70 state institutions participate. Additional to these efforts, El Salvador is positioned as one of the fifteen selected countries participating in an accelerated implementation program with the goal of monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals at the national level.

Our work through our programs Knowledge is Power, Farming for the Future, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene help to achieve 11 of these goals.

These eleven are:

1. No Poverty

2. Zero Hunger

3. Good Health and Well-Being

4. Quality Education

5. Gender Equality

6. Clean Water and Sanitation

10. Reduced Inequalities

11. Sustainable Cities and Communities

12. Responsible Consumption and Production

13. Climate Action

17. Partnerships for the Goals

For more information on how we work directly to achieve these goals we will be coming out with a new page to describe our work and how it has helped those in El Salvador.
