Community and Family Garden Update
May
Re-covering the Community Garden Greenhouse
Because of a problem with the initial covering for the Community Garden Greenhouse, community members spent a day replacing the covering with higher quality material. We were excited to have five CdA scholarship students help out! Brayan Cubias, Marya Coreas, Diego Pérez, Emerson Echeverria and Samuel Servellon all participated with enthusiasm.
Family Garden Materials Distributed
Five families in Los Tehuistes are participating in CdA’s Individual Organic Garden project this year. In May the families received the materials necessary to start their gardens. Our hope as an organization is that the gardens will help the families to have a much more varied and nutritious diet.
Planting Time!
In mid-May the community garden greenhouse was planted and water arrived for its reservoir. Community members and scholarship students alike showed up for the process.
Weeding, Fertilizing & Installing an Irrigation System
The next step for the community garden was to start weeding and applying organic fertilizer created by community members. Also exciting on this day was the installation of an irrigation system. The water is pumped from the garden water reservoir, into an elevated water holding tank, and down into tubes in the greenhouse.

Scholarship Students Help Señora Zulma Coreas in Her Garden
One afternoon in June, several of CdA’s scholarship created an organic pesticide to help Señora Zulma Coreas’ garden. She has been experiencing some difficulty with pests, but this organic solution should take care of the problem.

Community and Family Gardens Bearing Fruit!
In just two months, vegetables are being harvested in the community greenhouse and family gardens. Señora Zulma Coreas, for example, is already eating cucumbers from her garden, as well as tomatoes and peppers. The community garden has already produced green peppers and radishes! Tomatoes and other vegetables to come soon!
