Community Embraces the First Organic Agriculture Workshop

During the month of May, the organic agriculture project in Los Tehuistes began with a very enthusiastic group of attendees from the community. In the first session on May 5th, Kriscia D. Garcia Martínez, a recently graduated agricultural engineer in charge of teaching the workshops, taught the multiply benefits of organic agriculture.

Throughout the nine workshops planned, Miss Garcia will be covering theory and practice. With a hands-on emphasis, the workshops are intended to provide the community with the tools so they can practice a farming free of chemical or pesticides.

The organic agriculture workshop project has been one long overdue in Tehuiste where farming is the main source of sustainability for the majority of the families. Finding other ways to improve their health, protect the environment and find a substitute for traditional farming have been big motivators for this project.

During the first workshop, Ms. Garcia explained the techniques of how to prepare compost from organic materials and how to use it properly. The community had the chance to ask questions and participate in the creation of compost from manure, decaying fruit and some other organic materials.
